On-campus Job
Date
January 2024-April 2025
Location
Honors College, Indiana University Indianapolis
Overview:
As an H200 Mentor for the Introduction to Honors College course (HON-H 200), I have the privilege of guiding first-year honors students as they transition into the college environment. My primary focus is to provide mentorship, facilitate community-building activities, and assist in the development of important academic and professional skills. Through collaboration with faculty and fellow mentors, I help create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that encourages personal growth and success.
Key Responsibilities:
Team-Building and Course Programming:
I collaborate with faculty members to develop and implement engaging weekly team-building activities for students. These activities are designed to foster a sense of community and encourage peer-to-peer connections, making the transition into college life smoother for first-year honors students.
Panel Discussions:
In addition to facilitating activities, I plan and facilitate two panel discussions each semester, in collaboration with other honors mentors and honors scholars. These discussions allow students to engage in thoughtful conversations on topics relevant to their academic and personal development.
Mentorship and Support:
I provide ongoing mentorship and support to a group of 20 honors students, helping them navigate the challenges of their academic journey. I offer resources, advice, and encouragement to ensure that students feel equipped to succeed within the Honors College.
Feedback and Adaptation:
Throughout the semester, I gather student feedback to assess the effectiveness of programming and activities. Based on this feedback, I work with the Honors College team to make necessary adjustments, ensuring that the course and support systems continuously evolve to meet students' needs.
Impact:
Serving as an H200 Mentor has significantly enhanced my leadership and communication skills. It has given me the opportunity to connect with first-year students, help them adjust to the academic and social demands of college, and contribute to building a stronger sense of community within the Honors College. It is a rewarding experience to support students as they navigate their first year of college and inspire them to pursue their goals with confidence.
